The Aged Day was originally commissioned when I turned eighteen, but it took on a life of its own after my grandfather passed away while I was working on it. Finishing it became part of my grieving process.
I painted every day in the weeks that followed, pouring myself into the warmth and shadows of this imagined scene in Santorini, Greece. Though I hadn’t yet visited the island at the time, it became a quiet homage to my Greek heritage.
The collector who commissioned it was kind enough to let me keep it, and it’s remained one of the most personal pieces I’ve made. It’s also the reason I fell in love with painting nighttime, because at night, colors don’t soften, they exclaim.
