Within & Without is inspired by one of my favorite lines by F. Scott Fitzgerald in The Great Gatsby:
“I was within and without, simultaneously enchanted and repelled by the inexhaustible variety of life.”
Painted after a night on a rooftop in Manhattan, Within & Without captures a moment of suspended time, where I felt like an observer in the midst of movement, actively within the chaos & completely outside of it.
Like Nick Carraway, I became the witness to life while also being apart of it, one foot in and one foot out. This frame of mind, the "witness," is my consistent inspiration.
This piece is a meditation on modern isolation, curiosity, and quiet observation in chaos, a still moment suspended in the endless rhythm of the city.
